Associates in Psychological Services, P.A. offers a wide range of clinical services. Through the years, we have hired or trained staff in diverse specialties, including a full spectrum of adult, adolescent, and child services. Our staff have experience in:
- Emotional challenges, such as depression, anxiety & low self-esteem
Emotional challenges, such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, are common problems that can surface at any time of life. Using a straightforward approach, we help you to explore the issues underlying these challenges, to identify situations that evoke these emotions, and to learn cognitive and behavioral techniques to facilitate change.
- Marital, couples & family therapy
When going smoothly, our relationships can be a source of comfort and emotional support. But stress and conflict in family life can stretch relationships to the breaking point. Such problems can result from the challenges of raising children, managing finances, communicating effectively, dealing with blended or extended family members, and experiencing sexual dissatisfaction. We help couples and families minimize conflict, learn to work and live together more agreeably, and improve their relationships.
- Parenting issues
Whether you're the parent of a child, teen, or even an adult son or daughter, parenting is a challenging endeavor. Working with both children and their families, we offer assistance in developing effective strategies for raising, disciplining, and communicating with children.
- Behavior problems
There are many reasons why children display behavior problems. Sometimes they develop naturally as a result of the child's temperament or personality. Other times they develop in reaction to environmental stressors. We can help you determine the cause and develop straightforward, practical, and short-term behavioral plans to reduce or eliminate negative behavior patterns.
- Chronic pain management
Pain becomes chronic when it lasts for more than six months. Chronic pain patients often end up feeling depressed, anxious and overwhelmed - problems that actually reduce their pain tolerance and leave them feeling worse. Chronic pain can also result in functional changes that seriously diminish a person's ability to enjoy life. We help chronic pain patients address the psychological burdens that accompany chronic pain. This often results in feeling better, both emotionally and physically.
- Stress management
Stress is a common reaction to the demands of our everyday lives. However, when prolonged, stress can have serious and enduring physical and psychological effects. Our aim is to help you better understand the sources of stress in your life, develop strategies for effective coping, and learn how your stress level can be reduced.
- Grief and loss
Grief can result from significant life changes, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, loss of health, or even loss of financial or occupational security. While grief is a natural reaction to loss, everyone reacts differently. How people manage grief depends upon several factors, including the nature of the loss, the individual's personality and coping skills, and cultural and religious factors. We provide support to cope with grief and help in meeting the challenging life changes that can result from loss.
- Work / school issues
Many people experience stress at work. Similarly, many children have trouble performing in school. We can help you make work and school life more rewarding with effective coping strategies and stress-management skills. Typical issues we address include improving productivity, meeting deadlines, becoming more effective in managing relationships, and dealing effectively with authority figures.
- Sexual difficulties
Many people seek therapy to learn how to deal with different types of sexual problems. The sexual issues we specialize in include such problems as fidelity issues and various forms of sexual dysfunction. Our approach to treatment involves helping individuals and couples learn the communication and problem-solving skills needed to address such problems.
- Trauma recovery
Trauma involves a life event that produces severe and enduring emotional or psychological distress. Traumatic events typically occur unexpectedly, with little to no warning and with minimal time to prepare. While traumatic events are sometimes large-scale and communal, they can also result from an individual experience, such as a car accident, a life-threatening injury or various forms of abuse. We help trauma victims in their recovery by using therapeutic approaches to facilitate coping and healing.
In addition, we offer specialized forensic services, such as:
- Court testimony
A number of the staff at APS are experienced forensic psychologists who have testified many times in depositions and in court.
- Criminal evaluations
Criminal evaluations can occur in a number of contexts - competence to stand trial or waive Miranda rights; juveniles who commit serious crimes; and sex offender risk assessments, among others. APS staff regularly perform these evaluations and are widely used by both defense and prosecution throughout New Jersey.
- Personal injury evaluations
One component of a personal injury claim is emotional damages. APS forensic psychologists have performed numerous evaluations to assess the psychological impact of various traumatic events.
- Evaluations in child abuse cases
APS evaluators are regularly used by New Jersey's child protection agency as well as private attorneys in child abuse cases to develop management plans for parents and placements that are in the best interest of children.
